An ARC Review of Amanda Wright’s Fantasy Adventure Novel: Darkfell
“His is a life of books and peace…until a dying warrior’s touch ignites an ancient magic within his blood.”
I was lucky enough to snag an Advance Reader Copy of Darkfell, scheduled to release in January, and this book was a breath of fresh air in my fantasy reading this year!
While Darkfell has all I love about fantasy—adventure, layered plots, unexpected twists, a new world (Realms!) to explore filled with creative creatures (one that I adored!) and original characters (Realm Walkers!) to root for—it does so in a new way, then offers more! I love a book that lets me escape, makes me laugh, swoon a bit, and even cry a little. Wright’s Darkfell accomplished all of that.
Being whisked away on the adventure with Thom Darkfell was thrilling, and Wright’s words immediately invested me in his adventure and its outcome. It wasn’t only a matter of plot satisfaction, although the storyline was incredibly fulfilling, but the vested interest was personal, too. I cared about Thom and his friends, and Thom’s arc spoke to my heart.
The surprises were the best! Without spoiling anything, know that you'll be hooked from the start, and the antagonist will make you squirm! Oh, and, yes, there is some romance, just enough and very sweet to fit with the story, not take it over, and serve the narrative excellently. The heroine is a bit feisty and independent but also full of light and compassion and joy, which I created softer presentation and enjoyable departure from the warrior women of more recent fantasy novels I’ve read. Loved her!
I really appreciated Wright’s approach with the supernatural in her fantasy world, too. Her style is not heavy-handed. Rather, the faith-thread is an intricate part of the world’s lore, honoring to people of faith while not alienating other readers. In Darkfell, Wright deftly weaves common fantasy tropes with new ideas, unusual perspectives, and even a few subtle nods to early fantasy writers. In addition, she delicately layered within the pages a spiritual conviction that offers hope and resonates with characters and reader alike.
Now I can't get enough Amanda Wright's storytelling! I'm crossing my fingers that there's more coming from this world! Darkfell is a little bit Eragon plus some Name of the Wind with the tone of Prince Caspian and the Dawn Treader. As others have noted, I would compare Wright’s writing to Patrick Carr’s. I highly recommend Darkfell by Amanda Wright and so do others.
