A Summer Poem for You
My favorite thing to do in the summer is to spend time on the beach. I love the brisk, salty beaches of the Pacific Northwest coastline. Visiting the ocean never fails to inspire a sense of awe in not just God’s beautiful creation but also just how majestic God himself is to be the creator and the master of something so vast as the ocean. Every inch of the coast has something new to offer, and even something as mundane as sand becomes poignant at the ocean. This poem was inspired by a walk on the beach at night and addresses how a different perspective, such as simply a different time of day, can offer great insight.
The Path We Walked This Morning
Looking into the night, I think
I see a lighter darkness,
the beach or just the light, dry sand
of the beach, the part that you don’t like to walk
in because it’s heavy and disrupts
your usually firm stride.
But I am sure the wet sand
as well as the sanguine sea
are rolled into the darkness
as one.
If we stare long enough, we may see
the white crest of a wave, a wave
big enough to snag the sight of a few rebellious stars
before it disappears into the blackness pulled by the hand
of heaven like wayward cotton from a tear
in the ocean’s ebony blanket.
