Wishes for the ‘24-’25 School Year

Funny signs like the one attached to this blog and memes on my agenda slides in my Advanced English classroom make me laugh and lighten the mood a little for my students, too. In all seriousness, school is around the corner, and it’s that time of year where you start seeing those Wishlists. You know which ones I mean…

Let me tell you a little about my class and why I have a list, too. I teach high school juniors and seniors, and, my goodness, these young adults are amazing people. They are going to change this world!

But they are also tired, and they put a lot of pressure on themselves to do everything. Mental health struggles are real, and this world is a hard place. When they make it to my room, some of them are excited to read and discuss a book or to improve their writing. Some are not, but even the ones who love words are often quite stressed.

A fixture of my classroom culture is the provision of coffee, cocoa, cider, and tea for my students. Students will enter and make a cup of something to take with them to their desk. They relax and let down their guard a little with a cup of something warm in their hands, or they get a pick me up after a long night of studying. Either way, I get a chance to pour into them literally as well as figuratively. Sometimes, I’m not their current teacher, or they don’t have my course on a certain day, but the students know they can still come in and get a drink at my coffee station.

As they make their beverage, they’ll stand by my desk, and I can ask them about their day, their evening the night before, their week, and more. I can connect with them where they are. It’s a part of my ministry as a teacher to meet my students where they are, and this helps foster that.

Currently, I have a good stash of traditional school supplies that was donated to my classroom (so grateful and blessed by that!), but the expenses of keeping up on offering my coffee table to my students is high. If anyone feels led to support my classroom in this way, my students and myself are forever grateful!
